Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Holistic Nutrition exactly?

A: Holistic Nutrition is a philosophy of health care that emphasizes taking personal responsibility for one's health and building a cooperative relationship between client and practitioner. It emphasizes evaluating the whole individual, including all of the factors that influence their state of health (emotional, physical, nutritional, environmental, genetic, and spiritual). By finding the root cause of imbalance in the body, client and practitioner are able to work together to correct those imbalances to promote health and well-being to its fullest. If we understand what caused it, we can begin to heal it.

Q: What is the difference between a Holistic Nutritionist and a Dietician?

A: There is often confusion about the difference between the two. Registered Dieticians follow government-regulated nutritional guidelines which are mainly concerned with macronutrient proportions (proteins, fats, and carbohydrates), caloric intake, and the like. Most of a Dietician's nutritional education is derived from Health Canada's ‘Food Pyramid', also known as the recommended daily servings of food groups. Dieticians do not recommend herbs, supplements, or any other healing modalities. As such, a Dietician's approach is geared mainly toward the population at large.

A Holistic Nutritionist is not regulated and therefore is not bound by government regulations. His or her nutritional knowledge is predicated on the belief that each individual is different and thus cannot follow the same nutritional formula as everyone else. Emphasis is placed on dietary macro- and micronutrient needs, including necessary supplemental or herbal recommendations, environmental changes, water intake, exercise, mind/body connection, and a host of other factors. In other words, a Holistic Nutritionist examines the whole person and makes health recommendations accordingly.

Q: What is the difference between a Holistic Nutritionist and a Naturopathic Doctor?

A: Much like the confusion surrounding Dieticians and Holistic Nutritionists, Naturopaths and Holistic Nutritionists are frequently confused as well. A Naturopath is a licenced physician who completed 4 years at a recognized holistic-oriented medical school. They are more inclined to recommend nutritional supplements and herbs and generally adopt a more natural philosophy to healing than the allopathic doctor. Much like a Holistic Nutritionist, a Naturopath opts for the least invasive approach to healing. Also, Naturopathy is a government-regulated profession and thus carries more stringent guidelines with it.
A Holistic Nutritionist, while using some of the same tools Naturopaths use, are much more food-oriented as a primary source of healing, also employing supplements, herbs, and other modalities to help each client. A Holistic Nutritionist is probably more detailed in terms of developing a customized health program for clients as opposed to being more "prescriptive."

Q: What kind of results can I expect?
A: That is a difficult question to answer. It really depends on a few factors: your current state of health, your commitment to taking personal responsibility and making changes, the lifestyle schedule you keep, and the type of results you are seeking. Your goals and results can be as big or as little as you want them to be. We will be there to guide and support you every step of the way in whatever it is you want to achieve.

Q: Is your service covered by OHIP?
A: No, but most people find the personal relationship that develops with a Holistic Nutritionist as well as experiencing markedly improved health to be extremely rewarding.

Q: Is your service covered by Company Benefit Health Plan?
A: Yes, but by most. You will need to communicate with your Human Resource department for more information on coverage.
